Location Pane Group Field?

I've recently started setting up some routes using a triaxial sensor. I read all the instructions about how to set up points and understand the same location id's etc for the triax points but every article in the knowledgebase talks about also setting the Group field. I don't understand how this field works, and my Enpac 2500's don't seem to care if a list has the group numbers in it or not... triaxial data is still collected with or without the group field populated. Are you supposed to set a different group number for each machine? each triax set of location id's? Each list? The emonitor help section is not much help... here is what it says for the "G" field: G Enter the group number for this location. Used to group locations for dual-channel or tri-axial data collection. When you add a location to a group, Emonitor displays a group number in the Group column. Group numbers can be between 1 and 65535 and you do not have to start with number 1. You can also have gaps between the group numbers. When a group number has been used, it will appear in the group column in a different color than a group number that has not been used. This allows you to easily keep track of the group numbers. Group numbers are also stored with the list and can be displayed in the List spreadsheet. To enter a group number, tag the location and then select the cell in the G column. Press Enter and then enter the group number. To clear the group number, select the cell in the G column and then press Delete. So, if the data collector does not care if a number is in the "G" field to get the triaxial data, then what purpose does it serve? Ed

Re: Location Pane Group Field?

The group field is not for every collector.  Some require it some do not.  It's been a while since I setup a triax in an Enpac 2500, so I do not recall the exact effects.  However, in general you setup a group for each set of locations.  HV and A.

Re: Location Pane Group Field?

Thanks Ozzy...

The Enpac 2500 does not seem to care if the Group field is populated or not.  Also, Emonitor 3.4 keeps populating the field with the number one when I double click on it, even though I have lots of group 1's already in other lists... I still don't get what this field is really supposed to do.

Ed - the group column is used to group triaxial and or dual measurements.  It is used with the Enpac 2500 in conjunction with the Channel LO. column.  Some detailed instructions are below:

NOTE:  If the locations are in order in the database they will be collected correctly w/o the group column.  However if the group column is used the do not have to be in order in the database but should be tagged in order when creating the list.

Re: Location Pane Group Field?

Thanks Greg,  This makes more sense now... If I understand correctly, your saying the grouping field is basically used to group locations together that are not in order in the database.  The 2500 does not care about the field, unless the the points are out of order!
